About

The Nanakshahi (Punjabi: ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ, nānakshāhī) calendar is a tropical solar calendar that is used to determine the dates of Gurpurabs (historical dates of the Gurus) and other historical events and festivals in Sikhi. The calendar is based on the 'Barah Maha' (Punjabi: ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਹਾ) baanis in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it translates as the "Twelve Months". There are two Barah Maha’s in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Both compositions compare the changes in nature and the seasons which are conveyed in the twelve-month cycle of the year to the spiritual progression of the soul. In the Nanakshahi calendar, the year begins with the month of Chet, with 1 Chet corresponding to March 14th.

Open Source

Our mission is to simplify and de-mystify the Nanakshahi calendar so normal Sangat can better understand the concepts. Part of this effort is to give a open-source library that developers can use when developing apps or websites.

The library can be found here: github.com/Sarabveer/nanakshahi-js
